National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) and Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft focused organization, launched an initiative to ensure quality and safety for pediatric patients who undergo cleft surgical procedures. One in 700 children is born with a cleft, a facial birth difference which, if left untreated, cause significant physical and mental health issues throughout adult life, hindering basic functions ranging from nutrition to language learning. Smile Train, which recognized the need to enhance the skills of OT Technicians to ensure better quality and safety partnered with NABH to design an innovative training program which was supported by MedLern’s unique innovative module to provide hands on simulation skills experience. The pilot program trained 37 mid-career OT Technicians from various Smile Train partner treatment hospitals in India. NABH, which is championing the cause of safe and quality healthcare through its various accreditations and training initiatives, played a critical role in designing the program and bringing together the expert faculty. Participants reinforced and enhanced their knowledge and practiced hands-on skills with interchangeable modules, covering sterile techniques, equipment handling, and emergency protocols under guidance from training specialists. Lasting 3 days, the program invited expert faculties from Anesthesia, Plastic Surgery, Basic Life Support and Nursing skills. Smile Train and NABH plan to roll out this initiative across the country and positively impact thousands of OTs.Smile Train has supported more than  7.5 lakh surgeries in India for such patients who are largely very young children and hence need enhanced safety and quality approach during and following the surgery.MedLern which is the leading hospital training platform in India introduced an innovative training approach which combines reinforcement of procedural knowledge along with hands-on practice and assessment on manikins. The hybrid approach has been objectively proven to fortify confidence and skill levels in the OT Technician and Nursing staff – directly improving the quality and safety of the procedures. Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of NABH, emphasized the program’s significance: “The initiative underlines the need for theoretical and practical training to be a continuous element of improving the quality and safety of healthcare. We hope to inspire and encourage healthcare providers to incorporate continuous training into the workplace processes and culture.Mrs. Renu Mehta,  Smile Train’s Area Director for South Asia shared “This is a key partnership for us as we scale up support to patients with clefts. Today we have partnerships with 130+ hospitals in India. Training OT Technicians is a critical element of ensuring quality and safety in these procedures as the number of hospitals providing this service expands. “We are humbled by the opportunity to be part of this critical initiative which touches millions of young lives. We are committed to providing innovative training approaches that suit the need of specific programs and the Modular Skills Trainer does exactly that” said Deepak Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO, MedLern.Contributing to the partnership were expert faculties from Smile Train, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital and NABH faculty. . The program itself was hosted by the Maharaja Agrasen Hospital.
