Da Vinci Xi will help in robot-assisted surgery technology

Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali announced the installation of the latest in robot-assisted surgery technology, Da Vinci Xi, by US-based Intuitive. By using this technology, Dr Anant Kumar (Chairman, Urology, Robotics & Renal Transplant, MSSH Vaishali) and Dr Vimal Dassi (Associate Director – Urology, Robotics, Kidney Transplant and Uro-Oncology) at MSSH Vaishali successfully performed the first-ever robotic kidney transplant in Uttar Pradesh.

The procedure was carried out on the 27-year-old female recipient, a resident of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, with minimal muscle cuts, reducing pain and blood loss as the incision was only 6 to 7 cms compared to 20-25 cm long incisions in the normal transplants. The Da Vinci surgical system was used in the procedure, allowing the tremor-free movement of the instruments. As a result, there was no damage to the graft kidney, ensuring swift recovery.

Dr Kumar, said, “We are happy to bring Robotic surgery in kidney transplants in UP for the first time. We hope that this is a good start to robotic surgeries in the state, and this will go a long way in availing new age surgical technology for people in this part of the country without having to travel to nearby metros like Delhi”.

Commenting on this installation, Dr Gaurav Aggarwal, Senior Vice President – Operations; Max Hospital Vaishali, said, “The installation will help to get better clinical outcomes in kidney surgeries, urological reconstructive surgeries, gallbladder removal, prostate removal, bariatric surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, fibroids removal, urinary incontinence, thoracic surgery, ENT surgery as well.”

Dr Vivek Bindal, Associate Director & Head – Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric & Robotic Surgery, MSSH, Vaishali said, ” In another ventral hernia case, a 44-year-old patient could travel back home in 48 hrs, as the abdominal wall reconstruction for this patient was done with just 8 mm incisions by using da Vinci Xi technology.”

These benefits go a long way in enabling the surgeon and care teams in providing life-enhancing care for patients. For example, in the recent prostate cancer surgery performed by Dr Puneet Ahluwalia (Principal Consultant – Surgical (Uro)Oncology, Max Institute of Cancer Care, Vaishali), the 52-year-old patient could get discharged and get back to his everyday life within 24 hours.
