Dharamshila NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital has successfully completed its 25th year with the record of around 1.5 lakh treated patients.To mark this honorary moment the hospital discussed its remarkable journey and the changing scenario of cancer in north India over last 25 years in Constitution Club of India where Dr. S. Khanna, Founder- Dharamshila Hospital and President- Dharamshila Cancer Foundation and Research centre, Commander Navneet Bali, Regional Director, North India, Narayana Health and Mr. Anuj Gupta, COO, Dharamshila NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital were present to share their respected views and honor the occasion. Some of the Cancer survivorstreated at DNSH with above 20 years of survivorshipwere also present to share their life saving experiences.
The Hospital came up with the first comprehensive cancer care centre of North India with facilities of cancer prevention, early cancer detection, complete staging work up, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer surgeries and supportive care at a time when no other hospital had these facilities in North India. In the tenure of 25 years, Dharamshila Narayana Hospital has witnessed that there are noticeable fluctuationsin the trends in commonly seen malignancies.There has been a decline of about 39% in cervical cancer cases, Breast cancer cases have increased by more than 44%, Head and neck and lung cancer cases have increased by about 22%.
The decrease in cervical cancer may be attributed to vaccination, regular cancer screening and low Human papilloma virus infections. A combination of poor food habits, unhealthy lifestyle and low physical activity emerged to be an important cause for other cancers,especially in combination with alcohol and tobacco.
Dr. S. Khanna, Founder- Dharamshila hospital and President- Dharamshila Cancer Foundation and Research Centre, in her message said that, “to stop the epidemic of cancer we need aggressive campaign in press and electronic media on cancer awareness with special focus on Lifestyle related cancers, we also need to let the public know about the importance of getting cancer screening done. In the past 25 years Dharamshila has done free cancer screening for more than 80,000 people.By picking up 454 patients at an early stages we were instrumental in saving their lives. We also need to enhanceavailability and affordability of HPV and Hepatitis vaccines by Govt and providefree cancer screening services at more centers and promote the existing screening services. Each district of India must have a comprehensive cancer center.
