The decision of the government to give a policy push to the medical devices industry in India is a laudatory step to decrease the country’s dependence on imported devices. To make the healthcare affordable, the industry is gradually moving towards manufacturing them within the country. Although challenges like certifications, establishing goodwill on quality of the products remain, more concrete partnerships are emerging between the government and the private sector in the medical device space for enabling Indian companies to blend their software capabilities with hardware. A number of manufacturing parks dedicated to medical devices are underway to build a strong foundation for the medical device ecosystem.
